The Twilight Fox

The Twilight Fox is a beautiful creature, he has a cunning mind and the most striking of features. Quick as the wind and light as a feather, dancing his way over thyme and through heather.
One day he tiptoed upon an old tree, with rickety branches and golden brown leaves. And as he passed along the tree's way, he could have sworn that he heard it say… “Hello my small and mischievous friend, how good it is to see you again”.
But I’ve never once walked past this tree? You saw a fox but twas not me…
Then the tree replied “don't be a twit, I’ve known you since you were a kit, before you wondered all alone this is the place you once called home.
Perhaps you don't remember me, or my leaves that once were evergreen, but when the hunters hounds drew near your mother came and left you here.
And through the years I watched you grow, asking where did mother go?
Until the day I watched you leave, my branches hung heavy and bark did grieve.
But now look at you, you're all grown up, my oldest friend, my lonesome pup. It seems that both of us have grown, and both of us are still alone.”
Then the twilight fox remembered the tree, and the den in which he used to sleep.
He pawed away the leaves that lay dead, and uncovered the words his mother had said… “Be quiet my love you have nothing to fear, I must keep running, but you must stay here. This tree is your home now, this tree is your friend. I promise that we’ll see each other again.”
“I never found mum,” he said with a breath. “I forgot that she was the reason I left, how long has it been that I’ve wandered alone? Looking for mum, looking for home.” Then the wind it did blow, the trees leaves did fall. The old fox sat in silence in awe of it all. And with a sigh of relief, he curled up in his den.
And there they sleep still.
The oldest of friends.
